On getting ‘The shot’

Putting pressure on yourself can cut through your creativity, says Brian Cooney. Relax and it will happen…

Have you ever felt the pressure of having to get ‘the shot’ upon arriving at a location? That messed up, jumbled up feeling in your head that can sometimes be so strong you literally can’t see anything? Then when you look around only to see everyone busily snapping away while you’re struggling.

So how do you deal with it?

Learn to be OK with not getting the shot.

Do everything in your power to get it, but if for some reason you don’t then nothing bad will happen.

Put things in perspective, you do this for fun right?

Take some deep breaths, slow down.

Look around. It’s a beautiful place, a lot of people never see the world when the light is this good!

The hardest part of any creative process is getting started so just get down to it and make a start anywhere.

Once you start shooting it will get easier – you relax and before you know it you’re loving it!
